Where We Work

Where We Work

The organization commenced its operations in the Danta block of Banaskantha district, Gujarat state, situated within the Aravalli ranges, stretching northwards into Rajasthan. Having firmly established ourselves in this region, we have conscientiously considered expanding our working area based on overall capacity and the needs expressed by the community. As a result, the geographical outreach of SMUT has now extended to encompass other areas in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

The main reason of the selection of this area is that the people of this area are not aware about health care and Family Welfare Activities. The signs of endemic and peripheral poverty are present in the target areas in the form of natural and cultural deprivation, isolation and neglectnegligenceionurbanization. alleviation . Major contributing factors to poverty has been caused byare deforestation, seasonal migration, lack of awareness about existing governmental facilities, high population growth rate, lack of health services and infrastructures, etc. Literacy rate has beenis comparatively lower than the nearby areas especially with the female literacy rate being especially is very low due to poor quality of education and infrastructure. No change has been observed in the trend of occupational pattern from many decades. Comparing the percentage of main workers, mainly agricultural farmers emerges very clearly, that tThe target group has 89% people engaged in agriculture and allied activities. In those areas And where agriculturale farmers are less, it is almost equally compensated in agricultural laborers. Expansion of families, bifurcation of land holdings and birth of more children in a family has resulted in to lower per capita income of the family and thus poverty of the people of this area. They are most poor families. The main occupation of the tribal people is agriculture.

The main crop of this area is maize as the environment is suitable only for this type of crops and the land of this region is hilly and mountainous. They depend upon rain fed farming but, the rainy season is not regular. The area is characterized by semi-arid climate with hot summer and general dryness expects and a short monsoon period. The average rainfall in the area varies from 650mm to 700mm in a year. During the last four decades every third year was a drought year. It only goes to show the economic backwardness of the area, even after 73 years of our freedom. There are no industries here – minor, meduium or small scale areas facilitated have no minor, medium small scale or any type of industry. So, unemployment and underemployment prevail throughout the year for bulk ofn the populace. This makes them go for labor work to different places. But most of the times they are not able to get continuous labor work. People have to depend on moneylenders because credit is not readily available from Government or Banks in these villages. All this has contributed to the region’s economic backwardness even after 73 years of the country’s independence.

Over the past years, SMUT has developed rapport and has established credibility amongst the tribal communities of Danta Taluka of Banaskantha district in Gujarat. SMUT aAfter firmly rooting ourselvesitself, has also thought has also been given to about expanding theits working area depending on the overall capacity, felt needs felt byof the community, etc. and as result, geographical outt reach of SMUT, has expanded to included Poshina and Idar block of Sabarkantha district of Gujarat state and Abu rRoad block of Sirohi district and Kotrda block of Udaipur district ofin Rajasthan state.
